Efforts Underway to Evacuate Chipolopolo’s Kampamba from War-Torn Tripoli

Following the deadly clashes between rival gunmen in Libya’s capital, Tripoli, after the killing of a powerful militia leader, the Zambian government, through the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, has announced that efforts are underway to ensure Chipolopolo midfielder Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba returns home safely.

The violence erupted in Tripoli’s southern districts, prompting authorities to impose an emergency lockdown. Residents reported hearing heavy gunfire and explosions across multiple neighbourhoods from about 9 p.m. local time (19:00 GMT) on Monday.

According to Al Jazeera, security sources confirmed the killing of Abdel Ghani al-Kikli, widely known as “Gheniwa,” the head of the influential Stability Support Authority (SSA) militia. His death sparked widespread gunfire and clashes across several parts of the city.

At least six people have been wounded, though it remains unclear whether the casualties are security personnel or civilians.

UN’s reaction on the security situation

The UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) expressed concern, saying it was “alarmed by the unfolding security situation in Tripoli, with intense fighting with heavy weaponry in densely populated civilian areas.”

UNSMIL added that it “calls on all parties to immediately cease fighting and restore calm, and reminds all parties of their obligations to protect civilians at all times.”

In a statement made available to BolaNews, the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts said, “it is closely monitoring the ongoing unrest in Tripoli, Libya, following reports of gunfire exchanges between rival factions in the city’s southern districts.”

“The Ministry has established direct contact with Mr. Kelvin Mubanga Kampamba, a professional Zambian footballer currently playing for Al Madina SC in the Libyan Premier League. Mr. Kampamba is safe and has expressed his willingness to return home in light of the deteriorating security situation.

In response, the Ministry has formally engaged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to assist in facilitating the safe evacuation of Mr. Kampamba from Libya.”

Kampamba joined the Libyan top-flight side last month from Zesco United after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
