Former Zambia National Team midfielder Noah Chivuta has described the departure of Avram Grant as “shocking news,” questioning the timing of the Football Association of Zambia’s (FAZ) decision to part ways with the Chipolopolo head coach just weeks before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
FAZ announced on Wednesday that it had mutually separated with Grant, who guided Zambia to two consecutive Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifications since taking charge in December 2022.
“The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has agreed to mutually separate with Zambia Senior Men’s National Team coach Avram Grant,” said FAZ General Secretary Machacha Shepande in a statement. “Both parties agreed to separate amicably, and we wish Mr. Grant the best of luck in his future endeavours.”
Chivuta, who was part of the 2012 AFCON winning squad, told BolaNews that while he acknowledged public concerns over recent performances, the decision was poorly timed.
“It came like shocking news, especially to me. I never expected to change a coach at this moment when AFCON is just around the corner, and the coach qualified us to the tournament. That’s something we haven’t achieved in a while,” he said.
Look deeper into the root causes – Chivuta
The former Chipolopolo midfielder urged Zambians to look deeper into the root causes of the team’s struggles rather than placing full blame on the coach.
“We need to check — is it really the coach, or is it the materials we have? Even if you brought in Mourinho or Pep Guardiola now, do you think we can win the Africa Cup?” he asked. “Sometimes we rush decisions without thinking of what’s next.”

Chivuta further warned that whoever replaces Grant will face immense pressure without adequate time to build a team.
“Whoever comes in now will be judged by what happens at AFCON. Do we have the patience to let them settle? Football is a project — it needs a long-term plan.”
He concluded: “We can’t just look at the end product every time. Players need consistency and proper development from the grassroots. This change may look like a victory to some, but I think it’s a setback. It’s short notice, and whoever comes in will be under pressure from day one.”
