Kenya national team head coach Benni McCarthy has hailed his side’s character and composure following a hard-fought 1-0 victory over two-time champions DR Congo in their opening Group A match at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Sunday.

Making their debut at the tournament, the Harambee Stars put up a brave fight to secure a historic win in front of a packed home crowd. The result places them joint top of Group A alongside Morocco, who lead the group on goal difference after defeating Angola 2-0 in the other fixture.

The decisive goal came in first-half stoppage time when midfielder Austine Odhiambo swiftly eliminated two Congolese defenders before calmly slotting the ball past the advancing goalkeeper Brudel Efonge to give the Harambee Stars a historic lead.

Speaking after the match, McCarthy praised the determination and bravery of his players while urging them to remain focused as the tournament progresses.

“We’ve made a good start, but we have to stay grounded. There are tough games ahead. But if the boys keep playing like this, we can go far,” said McCarthy.

“I’m proud of my team—many of them were stepping onto such a big stage for the first time. Beating one of the tournament favourites is massive for us.”

The South African tactician, who took over Kenya’s national team earlier this year, acknowledged the shaky start of his team but commended them for settling into the match and executing the game plan.

“We were nervous at the start, but once the boys settled, they showed real bravery,” he added.

Midfielder Alpha Onyango was named Man of the Match for his tireless shift in the middle of the park.

The win puts the CHAN co-hosts in a strong position ahead of their second group match against Angola, scheduled for Thursday.
