When Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly plays against Moroccan juggernaut Wydad Casablanca in Morocco tonight, the monarchs of African club football will be determined.

Al Ahly, who has a 2-1 lead from the first leg in Cairo last weekend, only needs to avoid defeat at the Stade Mohammed V to win their record-tying 11th Champions League championship, while Wydad merely needs an outright victory to retain their title.

Last season, in a one-legged final, Wydad won 2-0 in Casablanca to clinch their third African title.

“We have an edge over Al Ahly,”-Sven

According to Wydad coach Sven Vandenbroeck, his team will be in a better position coming into tonight’s game and Al Ahly will be under pressure.

“Pressure will be on Al Ahly because we are playing at home, and this will be an advantage to us. It will be a different game from the first leg. We are in a situation where we must win. Currently, the advantage is on Al Ahly, and we know they will not want to lose that advantage easily. But the goal we scored in the first leg gives us some edge,” he said during the press conference ahead of tonight’s game.

The Belgian stressed the significance of the game and asked his team to be cool and focused during the contest.

“This is a crucial game for me, the squad, and Wydad supporters, as well as the Moroccan populace. We’re attempting to make history by being the first Moroccan team to win back-to-back champions league titles, he said.

The Egyptian team has a superior record than Wydad in their previous 12 confrontations between the two north African heavyweights, having won five of the 12 games.
