In CAF’s release of the teams that will compete in the 2023–24 season, the Kenyan champions were excluded

CAF revoked Gor Mahia’s club licensing certificate after failing to honour payment agreements with former foreign players from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Mali.

The club’s chairman Ambrose Rachier said that they will stop signing foreign players. He stated that they are not getting value for money.

“It looks like many of the foreign-based players we have signed only come here to cause us problems and take money without giving us value,” he told Radio 47.

Rachier also disclosed that the top leadership of the club has supported the position to stop signing foreign players.

“We have had a discussion as the top leadership of the club….. And for now we are not going to sign any foreign players,” he explained.

The Kenyan Champions are not new to such circumstances. They were sanctioned by FIFA in 2021 after Congolese striker Sando Yangayay complained about the breaches of contract.

Gor Mahia were barred from signing and registering new players for two years. However, the ban was lifted after reaching an agreement with the players to pay their dues.

With Gor Mahia now out of the CAF Champions League, this means that Kenya will have no representation next season.

Kenya recently returned to international football after missing out on the previous season due to a FIFA suspension.
