Al Ahly qualified for their fourth consecutive TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final on Friday night, defeating Tunisia’s Esperance 1-0 in Cairo to qualify 4-0 on aggregate.

The record African champions entered the game with a 3-0 lead from the first leg, which was played last week in Tunisia. Percy Tau’s brace and Mahmoud Kahraba’s goal in the first leg were enough for Al Ahly to eliminate Esperance from the competition with one-nil scoreline.

Hussein Elshahat scored the solitary goal for the Egyptian side in the first half to secure the home victory. The win meant Al Ahly progressed to their sixth final in seven seasons.

After scoring a brace in the first leg in Tunisia, South African forward Percy Tau turned provider this time around. He set up Elshahat who made no mistake in giving the Al Ahly the lead in the 21st minute.

The Tunisian side came into the encounter without their head coach Nabil Maaloul. He resigned from his position a day after the first-leg defeat.

Anis Boussaidi had taken charge of the team on an interim basis following Maaloul’s departure.

The ten-time champions will now await the outcome of today’s match between holders Wydad Casablanca and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.

This year’s CAF Champions League final will be played on the 4th of June 2023.
