Heartbreak for Borussia Dortmund as Bayern wins title

Dortmund had a perfect chance of sealing their first league title in 11 years after last week Bayern Munich 3-1 defeat to RB Leipzig but eventually the Bavarians overtook them on the final day.

Following a 2-2 draw with Mainz on the final day of the season, Borussia Dortmund players and their fans were disappointed to see that Bayern Munich had won the Bundesliga on goal difference.

Dortmund only required a win to clinch their first Bundesliga championship in 11 years, but they failed. Sebastian Haller missed a penalty, and Mainz scored twice in the first 24 minutes.

In the other match, Jamal Musiala’s injury-time goal gave the Bavarians a thrilling 1-2 victory that guaranteed they would retain the Bundesliga championship.

Edin Terzic, manager of Borussia Dortmund, acknowledged that he felt empty after the game, which, had his club won, might have earned him the championship.

“You could feel the energy within the stadium and city. It was one goal in the other stadium that was missing, we knew we were 90 minutes away from lifting the trophy.” he said after the match.

The Dortmund boss went on to say that, regrettably, their greatest performance was insufficient to lead the club to victory.

“Sometimes it’s hard to miss a penalty, to conceded two early goals and all of a sudden it reels so heavy….. But we tried our best and unfortunately it wasn’t enough,” he added.

In a dramatic season finale, Bayern was celebrating an unexpected title victory. Dortmund’s hopes of winning their first league trophy since 2012 were dashed.

Bayern is the most successful club in German football history. They have won a record 31 national titles, including nine consecutively since 2013.
