Temwa Chawinga, a rising talent in women’s football from Malawi who plays for Kansas City, USA, was honored last night at the Malawi Sport Award with the title of Sports Woman of the Year 2023.

Temwa has beaten her elder sister Tabitha, who plays for French women’s football giants Paris Saint Germaine (PSG), and draughts star Susan Kachepa, who won five golds, silvers, and bronzes at the recent Africa Draughts Championships in Zambia.

In addition, she finished third in the rankings of Women’s World Best Top Division Goal Scorer. She played for Wuhan in the Chinese Women’s Super League and scored 30 goals. For the 2023 CAF Africa Women’s Player of the Year title, she received one nomination.

Temwa also led Malawi Women’s National Team, the Scorchers to their first-ever Cosafa Women’s Championship triumph in South Africa last year after beating Zambia.

During the Cosafa tournament, Temwa also won the player of the tournament and golden boot awards.

Speaking before the awards, Temwa who did not attend the event said: “A win from one of us is a win for both. We hope and pray that together we will continue to inspire sporting excellence and represent Malawi well.”
