Kalisto Pasuwa, the newly appointed coach of Malawi’s men’s national team, has been tasked with winning the Cosafa Cup for the first time and qualifying for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The Zimbabwean trainer has agreed to a two-year contract that will keep him in Malawi until 2027, with the option to extend it based on performance.

Fleetwood Haiya, president of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), said Pasuwa’s third goal is to win three of the remaining six World Cup qualifiers, which are scheduled for next month.

Haiya says if Pasuwa fails to meet the targets, he will be fired.

“If he does not perform, surely we will terminate his contract and look for another who will help us. We have told him that 2027 is a must for us to qualify for Afcon.

“For the two years [he will be in charge of Flames], we should win the Cosafa Cup… If not this year, we should win it next year. Yes, we know Cosafa is a developmental tournament .… But if we develop our team this year, then next year we should win it,” he said.

Pasuwa, who did not renew his contract with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets in December, is confident to achieve targets given.

“I know Malawi players; I know the culture of Malawian players and where to find them. I have been talking to the President; when we work together, we can go to Afcon in 2027,” he said.
