Malawi’s top clubs accused of match fixing

The super league of Malawi has started match-fixing investigations and appropriate corrective actions shall be taken against any team or official who shall be found on the wrong side of the law.

The Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has rejected a joint request between Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Silver Strikers to have their game postponed from Thursday, July 20 to a later date.

The two clubs emphasized in their statement that the two teams already have a demanding schedule and that players who traveled to South Africa with the Flames for Cosafa games are weary.

However, Sulom’s general secretary Williams Banda, said it is illegal for teams in any competition to conspire and discuss a league match without the knowledge of Sulom.

“In this regard, Sulom has started match-fixing investigations and appropriate corrective actions shall be taken against any team or official who shall be found on the wrong side of the law.”

Reads in part: “We therefore, regret to inform you that the request did not meet the requirements of article 19.4 as read with 19.12 of the Super League Rules and regulation.”

“Respectively the match will proceed as scheduled on 20th July at Kamuzu Stadium, 2023 and failure to fulfil the fixture shall lead to forfeiture of points as per SULOM rules and regulations.”

The two sides contributed eight players to Malawi

Both teams had contributed four players each to the Malawi National Team to participate during the 2023 Cosafa Cup games.

Sulom had suspended games involving the two clubs but failed to do the same to defending champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets who also contributed four players.

Bullets are on top with 26 points from 13 games with Silver following with 25 points from 11 games while Wanderers are fourth with 19 points the same games as Silver.
