Zambia U-20 striker Billy Daka aims to win the Golden Boot at the ongoing COSAFA Under-20 Championship in Maputo, Mozambique.
Daka made an impact after coming off the bench to score a late brace as the Young Chipolopolo beat Malawi 2-0 in their Group C opener on Friday.
Speaking after Saturday’s training session, Daka said the positive start had motivated the team ahead of Monday’s second group match against Comoros.
“It’s very encouraging for us as a team to start preparing to win. It really motivates us to continue to push so that we can win this upcoming game,” Daka said.
He said the contribution of players coming off the bench was equally important to the team’s success.
“It encourages us a lot because we who start on the bench are part of the team. We are more like game changers, so we just need to have one heart,” he said.
Daka said his personal target was to finish the tournament as the leading scorer.
“My personal target at the tournament is becoming top scorer. It’s not easy, but as for myself, I’m courageous, and I have faith that I’m going to be the top scorer in the tournament,” he said.
The striker, however, stressed that individual ambitions would be secondary to Zambia’s collective objectives.
“We are going to fight as a team so that we can win these upcoming games. As a team, we have faith enough to win these upcoming games,” Daka said.
The tournament is set as a qualifier for the Under-20 AFCON to be hosted by Ghana next year. The finalists will qualify for the Youth Africa Cup of Nations.
