The Flames, the national football team of Malawi, fell seven spots to rank 133 in the most recent FIFA Rankings.
Malawi last fell farther down the World’s FIFA Rankings in July 2016, falling 26 places from position 107 to position 133.
The current decline comes after the team’s consecutive losses in the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 qualifiers against Burundi and Burkina Faso.
The Flames’ greatest ranking was 53 in December 1992, while their lowest rank came in 2007 and 2008.
The drop is coming when the current president for Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Fleetwood Haiya has been advocating for the team to improve on the Fifa Rankings with the goal of hitting double digits.
Football commentator Kimu Kamau is disappointed with the drop and has asked FAM to wake up and find ways to bring back the lost glory.
“We need to find a means of winning games, our focus should be to our academy whereby we will bank on U20 and U23 teams for a better Malawi.
“We have seen teams like Angola and Senegal banking on junior players and today they have performed well on the international level,” he said.
Since the arrival of coach Patrick Mabedi in 2022, the Flames have poorly performed winning only five games, drawing five and losing five games.
