FIFA hopes to see a Zambian club qualify for the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in the near future.

This year, Africa was represented by Al Ahly SC, Wydad Casablanca, Espérance de Tunis, and Mamelodi Sundowns.

The tournament, which English Premier League side Chelsea won, will again be staged in 2029, following the same structure, where Africa will retain four qualification slots.

The slots will be determined by results in the CAF Champions League between 2024 and 2028. The winners of each season will qualify directly.

Speaking at the just-ended FIFA Club Professionalization and Management Workshop in Ndola, FIFA Project Manager Member Association (MA) Africa, Salah Osman, said he desires to see a Zambian club at the Club World Cup.

“During these two days [of the workshop] we could see the great work in the country [and] step by step we will get there .…. And hopefully one day we will see a Zambian club in the club world cup,” Osman said.

Currently, Power Dynamos carry Zambia’s hopes of qualifying for the next club World Cup. To do so, they have to win the 2026/27 Champions League.

No Zambian club has ever lifted the Champions League.

At the weekend, Power will be in Uganda to face Vipers in the pre-group stage first leg tie.
