Patrick Mabedi has been hired as the head coach of the Malawi national football team on a two-year deal.

In May, he took over from Romanian Mario Marinica, whose contract was not renewed because of poor results, and was named caretaker coach in September.

Football Association president Walter Nyamilandu Manda has confirmed the news to media.

Mabedi will have freedom to choose his backroom staff as that was the case with his predecessor Maria Marinica.

He guided the flames to a goalless draw and a 2 all draw against Ethiopia and Guinea in 2023 AFCON qualifying matches.

Mabedi told BolaNews in July that he was interested in signing with four teams, but he made it clear that the Flames were his main choice.

“I need to consider who has brought me this far. It is the FA [Football Association of Malawi] that has made me be here. Although others are interested, he said, the FA now holds the authority.

Mabedi’s first assignments will be the forthcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Liberia and Tunisia scheduled for next month.
