It was a fine start for Malawi clubs Silver Strikers and Mighty Wanderers, who registered a positive result on Sunday in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, respectively.

Silver Strikers were away to Elgeco Plus FC, a Madagascar club, where they played to a 1-all draw in Mauritius, and the Malawi club is hoping to utilize the home ground advantage next week when they host them.

It was a sweet home start for Wanderers, who hammered Botswana side Jwaneng Galaxy 1-0 in the CAF Confederation Cup at Bingu National Stadium.

A return match is on Saturday, 27 September, when Silver will be hosting Elgeco at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi, while Wanderers will be travelling to Botswana to play Jwaneng.

Silver Strikers started the game poorly, failing to defend long balls and close spaces, hence giving the home team a chance to punish them at 16 minutes when Randriamanampisoa Tony’s effort went into the net.

Halftime ended with the home team enjoying the narrow lead. In the second half, the Malawi side managed to contain the home team and created spaces to shoot, and at 54 minutes, it was level through striker Andrew Joseph, and 1-1 was the result.

Silver coach Edtson Kadenge thanked his boys for the result and said his side has chances to qualify if they take their chances at home.

“We have the energy to finish the game at home. We will do better at home,” he said.

Wanderers were on top of the game from the first half but found it difficult to break Jwaneng’s defense, which was solid.

They also struggled in the second half despite them playing with four attacking players. But at 80 minutes they found a breakthrough through Captain Felix Zulu, who smashed a powerful volley into the net to give the home team a deserved victory.

Wanderers coach Bob Mpinganjira thanked his boys but said they still have work to be done in Botswana, which he hopes will be done.
