At the FNB Stadium on Saturday, the South African men’s national team will play their final TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations qualifying game against Morocco.

Both teams, who have already qualified for the 2023 Afcon competition, will use this match to strengthen their pre-tournament preparations.

Ronwen Williams, the Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, has challenged his Mamelodi Sundowns teammates to emulate their CAF Champions League success when the Bafana team takes on Morocco on Saturday.

“Playing in the Level Champions League and making it all the way to the semifinals provides you one opportunity to play against top-notch competition. The Bafana skipper said, “These games are not easy, but they benefit us, especially at the national team level.

The goalie for Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, was pleased to see more South African sides competing in the CAF Champions League and said it would be good for the national squad.

“The experience that you get from these tournaments is crucial and we can see it with Sundowns playing Champions League year in, year out where the experience gained comes in handy. Also, having a few more South African teams next season will obviously help the team going forward for such fixtures,” concluded William.

South Africa denied Liberia qualification.

Zimbabwe ineligible to take part and Morocco already through after winning both of their opening matches, Liberia’s 2-2 draw in Johannesburg, courtesy of a 91st-minute equalizer, set up a winner-takes-all encounter between the same two countries on matchday four.

Two goals from Lyle Foster in Monrovia saw Bafana Bafana prevail 2-1, denying the Lone Stars a first Afcon appearance since 2002.

Remaining fixtures: 12 June: South Africa vs Morocco as well as Morocco vs Liberia, on the 4th of September 2023.
