Senegalese fans had planned a countrywide campaign to raise the USD 100,000 fine imposed on coach Papa Thiaw by CAF for instructing his players to leave the pitch during the AFCON final in Morocco.

On Thursday, the CAF Disciplinary Board handed down a series of sanctions to the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), as well as players and officials from both countries, following incidents during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final.

Senegal head coach Thiaw was given a five-match suspension from official CAF competitions and fined USD 100,000 “for unsporting conduct that breached CAF’s principles of fair play and integrity and brought the game into disrepute.”

This led fans to launch crowdfunding efforts to pay the fine on his behalf.

However, Thiaw has asked them not to. Posting on Instagram, he wrote: “People of Senegal, my family, your solidarity since the announcement of the sanctions goes straight to my heart. Thank you for the love you show me every day. However, I humbly ask you not to organize fundraising campaigns in my name. While I understand and appreciate this gesture of generosity, I invite you to redirect these funds toward more urgent causes, for the benefit of those who truly need them.”

As a result of the suspension, Thiaw will miss some of Senegal’s 2027 AFCON qualifiers in September.
