Patson Daka will enter Zambia’s top five all-time scorers if he scores against Comoros on Friday at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Friday in Casablanca.

The 27-year-old scored his 22nd goal in 52 appearances for Zambia against Comoros, drawing level with Collins Mbesuma, who reached the same tally in 65 matches.

“I am excited; I think it’s a motivation as well. We all know how big a name Collins Mbesuma is; he is an inspiration not only for me but for everyone in the team. I am just hoping that if I break that record, hopefully it’s going to help the team get maximum points in the game,” Daka said when asked about matching Mbesuma’s record and the prospect of surpassing it in the next match.

He is also just one goal shy of equalling Christopher Katongo’s all-time international goal record of 23.

Should he score tonight, he will join the top five all-time scorers, which includes Godfrey Ucar Chitalu (79 goals in 111 games), Alex Chola (43 goals in 102 games), Kalusha Bwalya (39 goals in 87 games), and Bernard Chanda (29 goals in 68 games.)

Zambia will take on Comoros in a crucial AFCON Group A matchup, which could push them closer to qualifying for the knockout stage.
