Topstar Blames ZPL for Super League Broadcast Blackout

Following a 72-hour ultimatum issued by Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) president Keith Mweemba to Topstar and the Zambian Premier League (ZPL) to resolve the MTN Super League broadcast blackout, the signal distributor has accused ZPL of not providing feed for the games.

Topstar has said ZPL is supposed to subcontract production houses, as its role is only to distribute the feed.

“In the contract between Zambian Premier League (ZPL) and TopStar Communications Company Limited (TopStar), each party has obligations, and the production rights solely rest on ZPL who are obligated to sub-contract production houses to produce the matches which TopStar distributes on its platform,” read part of their statement on Monday issued by Joy Chula, Public Relations Manager.

“Therefore, TopStar can only distribute feed which is shared by the production houses. TopStar has not received any feed for distribution on its platform from the ZPL-contracted production houses since November 2025 to date, hence there being no broadcast of the games.”

ZPL not following agreements – Topstar

Topstar also said it has “raised serious concerns regarding the performance of the agreement by ZPL, which concerns are still being discussed by both Parties.”

The company said it remains committed to the broadcast of the MTN Super League and has the full capacity to broadcast the games.

“Both parties are currently in talks and progress in sorting out the performance of the contractual obligations is going on well and an announcement will be made soon on the resumption of the broadcast of the league.”

Mweemba and Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis Nkandu today expressed concerns over the Super League TV blackout, with the FAZ president warning that legal action would be taken if contractual obligations continue to be ignored by Topstar.
