Malawi national team captain Gabadihno Mhango has said he will sue his South African club, Richards Bay, for allegedly failing to honour its contractual obligations.
Mhango, who has been sidelined since last year, is currently in Malawi recovering from an injury he sustained while playing for his club in South Africa.
Speaking last night during the JaaKev Show, Mhango said that after suffering the injury, Richards Bay refused to take responsibility, forcing him to seek support from Football Association of Malawi (FAM) president Fleetwood Haiya.
Mhango said the national team has supported him throughout his recovery and covered all the medical expenses for his operation.
“I was injured during a match in South Africa, and I came here for an operation. I failed to do it in South Africa because my team refused to do it; hence, I came here for it.
“This is a responsibility of the team, the team I am playing now has financial challenges, but they could do it, it’s just politics. There is nothing I can change, anyway it happens.”
“It will backfire on them” – warns Mhango
Mhango also revealed that he, the club is still paying his salary but failed to cover medical costs and warned that it will backfire on them.
“The team is still paying me for my salaries, but for medical I asked the president Mr. Haiya. I have been helped by the national team, and they have paid everything for the operation; the club has done nothing. It will backfire on them because I have a contract with them but did not take part. The contract I signed says anything that happens to me, they [club] will take responsibility, but never did it, I think I have to sue them; that’s the only way,” said Mhango.
Mhango indicated that he will return to Richards Bay this week and hopes to return to the playing field by November.
The Malawi captain said he still has one year remaining on his contract with Richards Bay. He missed the latter half of last season after suffering an Achilles tendon injury.
