US-based Malawian women’s football star Temwa Chawinga is thrilled to have finished 17th in the 2025 Women’s Ballon d’Or rankings, announced on Monday in Paris, France.
The Scorchers striker and Zambia forward Barbra Banda were the only African nominees, with Banda finishing 14th in the world.
Barcelona and Spain star Aitana Bonmatí won the women’s Ballon d’Or for the third consecutive year, edging Mariona Caldentey to the award. In the men’s category, France and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward Ousmane Dembélé was crowned winner at the Théâtre du Châtelet, beating Barcelona and Spain’s Lamine Yamal to the top prize.
Speaking to Bola News this morning, the Kansas City Current forward said she is happy with her global ranking. “I thank God for this, I never expected this, it’s God’s grace at work,” she said.
Chawinga sends a message home
Chawinga has since encouraged players in Malawi and beyond to remain faithful to their beliefs and to work hard.
“I encourage girls in Malawi that everything is possible. I never expected this when I was young, but today I have finished 17th in the world. This is God at work,” she said.
“To girls in Malawi and across the world, do not give up in life…. Work hard, there is God who knows us well and knows our tomorrow. Keep believing and work hard,” she added.
The 27-year-old earned her nomination after a record-breaking 2024 season, in which she scored 20 goals in 25 matches, surpassing Sam Kerr’s previous record of 18 goals.
She won the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Golden Boot, becoming the first Africa-born player to do so. Chawinga also made history as the first player to score against every active team in a single season.
She has followed in the footsteps of her elder sister, Tabitha, who finished 16th in the Ballon d’Or awards.
