Incoming Zesco United head coach Tenant Chilumba says the team still has some work to do despite beating Power Dynamos in the finals of the Samuel Zoom Carling Black Label Charity Shield Cup.
Zesco claimed their sixth Charity Shield after defeating Super League champions Power Dynamos 2-0 at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Ndola-based side will be hoping to deliver a strong performance this season following their massive recruitment of players.
Speaking to journalists in a post-match interview, Chilumba, who took charge of his first game for Zesco, expressed happiness with the team’s display.
“It was a good game; I think we put up a good game. I think we did what we did when we were doing pre-season. I think the fitness level was okay. It was a good game, but of course, there are a few things we have to work on before the season,” Chilumba said.
“I think fitness levels – we are almost there, but it’s just tactical. We haven’t played friendlies so far, but this game is good for the boys,” he said.
The former Kabwe Warriors boss believes the team is ready to compete in continental football.
“I think on continental football, we are almost there. Look at the way we have played — of course we used one or two players from Nigeria. I think they did well in the first half, then we brought in two youngsters from the U20,” noted Chilumba.
Zesco will face Konkola Blades in their opening match of the new season. They will also meet the Gabonese side FC 105 in the preliminary stage of the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup.
Zesco United will be aiming to help Zambia restore the four lost slots in continental football.
