KITWE—Nkana needed the lottery of penalties to progress to the quarterfinals of the ABSA Cup after surviving a scare at the hands of third tier side Roan United at Arthur Davies Stadium in Kitwe.

After playing to a 1 – all draw in regulation time, Nkana were saved by Roan United’s poor shooting abilities, managing a 3 – 1 win in the shootout.

However, it is not a performance that coach Mwenya Chipepo wanted more so with the Kitwe Derby looming.

“It was not easy, we saw the way Roan United were playing. They played good football despite scoring….we did not expect Roan United to play like that,” Chipepo said.

Wilfred Chitembo scored for Roan in the 45th minute when he beat Patrick Chooma from the spot.

With 15 minutes left before the game, Nkana drew level through Idris Mbombo. The two teams could not break each other after that.

“We did not underrate them,” Chipepo said. “we need to work hard because there is a lot work to do.”

His opposite number Satchmo Chakawa was impressed with his boys despite the result.

“We did not start well, we grew in the game. I am super proud of this boys,” Chakawa said.

In an earlier match, Konkola Blades had an easy passage to the last eight after beating Solwezi Academy 2-0.
