Zambia national team coach Avram Grant has overlooked Power Dynamos goalkeeper Willard Mwanza for a call-up to the friendly match against Russia, scheduled for March 25 in Moscow.
Mwanza, who has been a standout performer for Power Dynamos, has played a crucial role in their defense. His exceptional performances, including six clean sheets and just one goal conceded since February, have been pivotal in the team’s strong defensive record. These contributions were key to the club’s rise to the top of the league, and he has become a fan favorite due to his consistent and reliable displays.

In contrast, regular national team goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga, who also plays for Power Dynamos, has seen his position in the squad slip down the pecking order and hasn’t played since late January.
Mutapa on Mulenga -Mwanza comparisons
Last October, Power Dynamos head coach Oswald Mutapa explained that it would not be automatic for Mulenga to return to the starting XI after recovering from a facial injury sustained while on national duty.
“The chance came on itself, he was injured, and someone [Mwanza] came to take his position. He has to fight to take the position,” Mutapa said.
However, Mutapa emphasized that the club recognizes Mulenga’s role as a national team player and is committed to ensuring he is in good form for international duty.
“Yes, we know he is a national team goalkeeper and we want Power Dynamos to produce him for the national team. Where there is a chance that there will be a national engagement, we would love him [Mulenga] to have game time so that he performs well for the national team,” Mutapa added.
Despite his lack of game time at club level, BolaNews has confirmed that Grant has called up Mulenga for the friendly match against Russia, which is part of Zambia’s preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in December.
Mulenga, along with midfielder Dominic Chanda, is one of only two Power Dynamos players selected for the friendly.
