The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) and Eden University have signed a three-year sponsorship agreement for the Zambian Women’s Super League (ZWSL), a significant step towards increasing the development and visibility of women’s football in Zambia.

According to BolaNews sources, the deal is worth K3,000,000 and aims to increase competition, improve player development, and provide more opportunities for women in sports.

The official signing ceremony took place on Friday at Lusaka’s Protea Tower. Acting Minister of Youth, Sport, and Art Hon. Makuzo Chikote MP, Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) President Mr. Andrew Kamanga, ZPL Chairman Mr. Kephas Katongo, ZPL CEO Joseph Chimpapwe, Vice-Chancellor of Eden University, Dr. Alvert Ng’andu, and his CEO, Kelvin Kaunda, were all in attendance.

Mr. Makuzo was pleased with Eden University and encouraged other business players to emulate and support the growth of women’s football, while Kamanga expressed satisfaction, stating that they had been looking for a sponsor for a long time and were relieved to finally have one.

“Partnership Brings Tremendous Value” – ZPL

The collaboration between the ZPL and Eden University represents a step forward in the promotion of women’s football, with the sponsorship expected to have a significant impact on the league’s future, as it has not had a sponsor since its inception.

“With this partnership between ZPL and Eden University, we now have an even greater opportunity to build on these successes [by women’s teams] and elevate the women’s Super League to the next level. This partnership brings tremendous value, not only to the league but to the players, coaches, and fans who are so passionate about women’s football,” said ZPL Chairman Mr. Kephas Katongo.

Dr. Alvert Ng’andu, Vice-Chancellor of Eden University, also spoke about the university’s dedication to supporting sports initiatives, particularly those aimed at empowering women.

“Eden University Women’s League sponsorship agreement, which will span from 2024 to 2027, represents more than just a partnership. It is a shared commitment to the development and empowerment of young people and to creating pathways for success through education and sports.”
