Chirundu United striker Lastone Manyongwe scored the equalizer to secure the Border Boys’ qualification for the 2024-25 National Division One League.
The team trailed 1-0 to Ndola United, but the goal ensured that the spoils were shared.
The Border Boys have been promoted to the second-tier league for the first time. This came after an impressive two wins and two draws in the current playoffs.
Manyongwe, a Chawama United product, expressed his delight at scoring the crucial goal that secured the team’s qualification.
He has described scoring the goal that sealed his team’s promotion as the best feeling ever.
“It was the best feeling scoring the goal that took the team to national division one,” Manyongwe told BolaNews. “However, I’m now shifting focus to fighting for the place in the squad as we start playing in national division one because it is a dream come true.”
Manyongwe targets Golden Boot next season
Manyongwe scored four goals for Chirundu United across all competitions, including one in the 2024 Absa Cup tournament.
“I think I can do even better next season. I’m aiming for the top scorers’ award in National Division One. My initial target is to score 12 goals, which will put me in a better position to fight for the top scorer,” the 23-year-old striker said.
Chirundu United were dominant last season in the Lusaka Provincial Division One League. Manyongwe is confident the team will settle quickly in the National Division One League.
He said, “It is an awesome experience; it is my first time, and most of the players are new…… But I believe with the way we have been playing, we will be able to settle in and compete favourably among the good teams.”
Meanwhile, River Plate is the other team that has been promoted, while two more slots are still up for grabs.
