Anthony Akumu, a former midfield player for Zesco United, left Japanese team Sagan Tosu after his contract expired in January.

It is widely reported that numerous clubs in Africa as well as outside of the continent have shown interest in signing him.

The Kenyan midfielder joined Sagan Tosu in December 2022 following his release by South African top side Kaizer Chiefs.

He was consistently in and out of the Sagan Tosu squad, and he only featured for the team five times, all in cup games, despite the side playing 41 games since he signed.

Speaking at a news conference, Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat explained that Akumu, in spite of his little playing time at his club, is nearing the completion of his departure from Sagan Tosu. Firat has maintained faith in Akumu.

Firat did not reveal the club Akumu would be joining, but he was certain he would be moving to a new club.

“He has always been in training, and I know now that he has a new club out of Africa that he is close to signing for, but it is up to him to tell you,” Firat said.

Firat has appreciated the midfielder’s professionalism, which has earned him a place in his squad ahead of the Four nation tournament in Malawi.

“Anthony is a top professional player and he has been training very well even though he is clubless. Physically he is in top shape. He has done well for us and there was no reason to omit him“

“He is never a problem; he is a top professional, and he is taking very good care of his physical department. He also has experience, so it will not be a problem,” Firat stated.
