Leicester City put up a five-star performance to secure their fifth Championship victory and widen the distance to second-place Preston, who play later today.
The Saints only managed to score once through Samuel Edozie as the 2015–2016 Premier League Champions easily defeated them 4-1 thanks to goals from Jamie Vardy, Kasey McAteer, Wilfred Ndidi, and Stephy Madvididi.
The game also marked the comeback of Zambian international Patson Daka, who was chosen for the matchday squad for the first-time following Leicester City’s 4–0 loss to Liverpool in a pre–season friendly.
Enzo Maresca, the manager of Leicester City, hinted that Daka might return but did not know if he would play against the Saints.
“He was one of the players who could leave but it doesn’t happen,” Maresca said at his press conference on Thursday morning, before the trip to Southampton. “Now he’s here, he’s with us, and for me he’s one of the players. If we need him, we will use him.”
“He’s a quick player, he can attack in behind, run in behind. He can also link in the way we want to play. He’s a complete player for us,” he added.
The Foxes looked strong in front of goal as they sought to return to the Premier League, despite Daka not playing a single minute of last night’s encounter.
