“We’re in Pole Position,” Says Mutapa as Power Dynamos Edge Closer to Eighth Title

Power Dynamos head coach Oswald Mutapa says his team is firmly in pole position to win the MTN Super League title, following their crucial 2-0 victory over Nkwazi that brought them within touching distance of an eighth league crown.

Power Dynamos have moved closer to securing their eighth title with a 2–0 victory over Nkwazi. They could officially be crowned champions on April 20 if they defeat their fierce rivals, Nkana, in the Kitwe Derby and if Zesco United drop points against Lumwana Radiants that same weekend.

At some point in the season, Oswald Mutapa was a man under fire, with fans calling for his blood, but those who stuck with him will feel vindicated following a great run of results.

You can understand those who were calling for Mutapa’s head. His side only had one win in the opening six matches, with a run of one win, one loss, and four draws. Credit goes to the executive for having stayed with Mutapa.

At the moment, they are on their best run that has seen them unbeaten this year. The win over Nkwazi has seen them maintain their six–point lead at the summit and could see them crowned champions when they face Nkana.

How the game unfolded

Titus Chansa set the ball rolling in the 25th minute. The ex–Mutondo Stars striker made the easiest of first touches to beat Nkwazi keeper Lukas Mainza after receiving a ball teed by defender Jackson Mulambya.

The Ndeke side was not done. Three minutes from the break, Prince Mumba doubled the lead with a goal that epitomised teamwork.

Chance sent the ball into the box, then midfielder Eddie Ankobo flicked it into the path of Mumba, who made no mistake.

“The chances of winning the league are there; we are in pole position. We just need to work even harder so that we can get the championship,” Mutapa said after the match.

It was a sad return to Arthur Davies Stadium for Nkwazi coach Aggrey Chinyangi, who is a certified Power legend.

In the second half, Nkwazi tried to come back into the game, but Chiyangi’s men could not do enough to deny the in-form team from keeping their lead.

Power, who have 63 points, have remained in form control of the title race with three games to go, despite Nkana and Zesco United winning their respective matches by an identical scoreline of 1 – 0.
