ZESCO United coach Emmanuel Siwale believes his players need to move past their continental commitments and refocus on winning games in the domestic league.
The nine-time MTN Super League champions have suffered three consecutive defeats in recent fixtures. ZESCO lost 1-0 to Napsa Stars before falling 2-1 to Green Buffaloes and, most recently, losing 1-0 to Power Dynamos in a rescheduled match played at Arthur Davies Stadium on Wednesday.
Siwale said in an interview that it is disappointing to see the team lose three games in a row.
“It’s very frustrating, especially that we didn’t even put one in the net, but this is a painful loss,” he said. “It’s only that we have not gotten a win ever since we qualified for the group stage. Sometimes this is what you expect because the boys put it all in the CAF, forgetting that this is what made us play the CAF. So as soon as they realize this, I am sure we will be good to go.”
ZESCO currently sits 12th in the standings with 10 points from eight matches, and Siwale has expressed concern over the team’s chances of qualifying for the ABSA Cup.
“It is worrying because that is not where we belong; we have to defend the ABSA, but if we can’t win, how are we going to defend it? Because at the moment that is our target, the ABSA. We won it, and if we can pull away from the bottom, then it’s not going to be good for a team like us,” he noted.
The nine-time Zambian Super League champions will now turn their focus to their next fixture, an away clash against FC Muza in Mazabuka.
