Power Dynamos Win 2024/25 MTN Super League, Mutapa Talks Tough Start

Despite a poor start to the season, Mutapa claimed that there were constant indications that he would win the league with Power Dynamos.

Power Dynamos have been crowned champions of the 2024/25 MTN Super League after defeating Green Eagles on Saturday at the Arthur Davies Stadium.

Brian Masanyinga scored the decisive goal from the penalty spot after Prince Mumba was fouled in the box, securing the vital win that sealed the title.

As champions of Zambia, Power Dynamos will represent the country in the 2025/26 CAF Champions League. The club has participated in continental competitions 13 times, including three appearances in the modern CAF Champions League format, although they have yet to advance beyond the second round. Notably, they remain the only Zambian club to have won a continental trophy, lifting the CAF Cup Winners’ Cup in 1991.

This latest triumph marks Power Dynamos’ eighth league title, adding to their previous wins in 1984, 1991, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2011, and 2023.

Mutapa: From Facing the sack to winning the league

At the helm of this success is coach Oswald Mutapa, who has claimed his first league title despite a rocky start to the season.

Early in the campaign, Power Dynamos went five matches without a win, prompting criticism and calls for Mutapa’s dismissal from some sections of the fans.

“Actually I don’t have anything to prove to the fans, I feel I have done it all, those that know football will tell you,” Mutapa said when asked about the early-season pressure. “Yes, that was their call, but as a team even when we didn’t do well in terms of results—we had gone five games minus winning, then we lost three consecutive—we didn’t score then but played good football. Then we started scoring, kept clean sheets, nothing changed much, it was just a process.”

A banner by Power Dynamos fans reading, “Mutapa must go, we are tired of losing.”

Following that difficult period, Mutapa turned things around, leading Power Dynamos on a remarkable 12-match unbeaten run that propelled them past second-placed Zesco United.

“In the first round of the league, we said we are winning the league,” Mutapa added. “Signs were there, even when we lost, no teams were going very far from us. We had the confidence.”
