Chaos erupted at Nkoloma Stadium on Thursday in Lusaka following the MTN Super League match between Red Arrows and Power Dynamos FC, which ended in a goalless draw.
A fan, only identified as Meleki, invaded the pitch shortly before the final whistle and attempted to confront the referee. Stadium stewards quickly intervened and forcibly escorted him off the field.
The incident appeared to spark further unrest, as supporters from both sides began throwing bottles at each other, resulting in several fans sustaining injuries.
Most of the Power Dynamos fans who were injured were immediately offered first aid at the stadium.
The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has strongly condemned the acts of violence.
“The League has since instituted a full investigation into the matter in collaboration with relevant authorities and match officials. Those found responsible will face disciplinary action in accordance with the League Rules and Regulations,” ZPL said in a statement.
“What happened at Nkholoma Stadium is extremely disappointing and unacceptable. As the Zambian Premier League, we are committed to ensuring that our stadia remain safe spaces for players, officials and supporters. We will not tolerate any acts of violence, and firm action will be taken against those found wanting. We urge fans to support their teams passionately but responsibly,” ZPL Chief Executive Officer Joseph Chimpampwe.
