Nchimunya Mweetwa, a former international striker, has explained why strikers in Zambia’s Super League have a low goal-return ratio.

Last season, former Green Eagles striker Freddy Michael won the top scorer award with 14 goals, while Enock Sakala finished second with 12 goals.

Fans have expressed general concern about the elite league’s strikers’ low scoring rates.

In an interview with BolaNews, former ZESCO United striker Mweetwa acknowledged the low scoring rate in the league, stating that there is a need for striker coaches in the country.

“Yes, we are not scoring a lot of goals in the league, but there are so many factors that have contributed to the low scoring of goals,” Mweetwa said. “It’s either teams are defending well as a unit or there are a few good-quality strikers around. Scoring is an art that needs perfection, and that’s why today’s football demands that teams have a specialized strikers’ coach.”

Mweetwa has also called for investment at the grass-roots level by the corporate world to help Zambian clubs compete favorably at the continental level.

“A lot of work needs to be done, especially at the grass-roots level, because there is something missing in our football at the moment, and we need everyone to come on board and support its development. I would want to see the corporate come on board to give more support to the association and clubs for us to compete favorably on the continental scene,” he said.
