The race to the Golden Boot is already heating up in the 2024-25 Zambian Super League, with two joint National Division One League top scorers registering their presence in the top-tier league.
As of week three, the top four contestants of the scorers crown have hit a combined 10 goals, promising an exciting season that could potentially see the overall winner hit over 15 goals in the season.
Here is a rundown of some of the leading contenders for the gong as of Week 3 of the Zambian SuperLeague:
1. Maxwell Mulutula (Nchanga Rangers)
The striker has continued from where he left off last season in the National Division One League, where he was among the joint-top three scorers with 13 goals.
Mulutula’s goal-scoring prowess contributed greatly to Nchanga Rangers return to the top flight, and he has not disappointed in the opening weeks of the new season.
It is only week three, and the striker has already scored four goals for Robert Tembo’s side, which is currently top of the table with six points.
Mulutula opened his scoring account against FC MUZA on matchday one, though he couldn’t score against Kabwe Warriors before he once again found his scoring boots to hit three past Lumwana Radiants.
2. Benjamin Chisala (Atletico Lusaka)
Chisala finished the 2023–24 FAZ National Division One League season with 13 goals.
In his debut season in the Super League, the budding striker has already scored three goals in his first three matches.
Atletico Lusaka are competing in the Super League for the first time with the youngest squad in the league.
The Bad Boys have so far scored in three matches played, showcasing their ability to create chances in the final third, which will serve to the best of Chisala considering his knack for goals.
3. Christopher Zulu (Nkwazi)
With two games under his belt, Zulu has already set the pace at Nkwazi with his two goals in the first week of the Zambian Super League season.
He registered his two goals against Mutondo Stars in Week One but could not find the back of the net in the match against Napsa Stars on Wednesday.
The striker’s first goal was from the spot-kick.
4. Merlin Kapela (Green Buffaloes)
The newly signed Congolese striker scored twice on his debut against Indeni Football Club last Sunday at Sunset Stadium in Lusaka.
Kapela, who joined the Army side from top flight side AC Kuya Sport of Kinshasa, looks ready to cement his place in the starting eleven under Masautso Tembo.
Despite not scoring in a Week 3 encounter against Forest Rangers, Kapela looks set to challenge for the Golden Boot.
5. Laurent Mwanza (Nchanga Rangers)
Mwanza has so proven to be the best penalty-taker in the season thus far. He finds himself in the top scorers’ conversations after converting two penalties for Nchanga against FC MUZA and Lumwana Radiants.
