Four clubs Chipepo could join after leaving Power Dynamos

FIVE months after guiding Power Dynamos to their first league title since 2011, Mwenya Chipepo has quit his boyhood side sending shock waves among the club’s supporters.

Chipepo, credited with ending Power’s league title drought last season, is said to have grown frustrated at the club, citing a lack of support and protection from the executive committee.

Chipepo joined Power in October 2021 and was an instant hit, lifting the club from the relegation zone in Week Seven to a fifth-place finish at the end of the season.

The following season, he staged a title charge that saw Power win the league for the first time since 2011, something that led him to win over many doubters.

Power Dynamos won the 2021-22 MTN/FAZ Super League.

He was rewarded with a three-year contract this season.

However, Chipepo’s tactics and capabilities to replicate last season’s success have been brought into question this season following a sluggish start to the campaign.

Power were eliminated from the Champions League at the pre-group stage by Tanzanian side Simba SC.

In the league, they are currently on a run of four winless matches. They trail leaders, Red Arrows by five points.

Yesterday, Chipepo confirmed his departure in an interview with the Daily Mail. However, the club has maintained he is still in charge.

So, where next for Chipepo? Here are a few potential destinations:

Forest Rangers

Forest Rangers are without a substantive coach following the departure of Ian Bakala, who left for Nkana. The Ndola club has been linked with a number of coaches including veteran trainer Beston Chambeshi.

At the moment, the team is drilled by Kennedy Kashobondo in an interim capacity, assisted by long-time assistant coach Owen Kaposa.

For an ambitious club like Forest, they are not content with their current position of 11th on the log. It is against this background that they could be courting Chipepo.

Chipepo fits the bill, he is a Ndola resident and has proven that he has a knack for working with talented players, bringing the best out of them with his coaching methods.

Prison Leopards

If Forest are entertaining thoughts of landing Chipepo, they will have to fend off competition from Prison Leopards. In under a month, Prison have lost two coaches.

First, Albert Kachinga resigned from his post; they resorted to Chris Kaunda who lasted not more than one game before escaping the Prison walls of Kabwe.

Now, it appears Prison may just return to Chipepo, their former coach.

Prison have an upper hand to land Chipepo given that he is an offer in the Zambia Correctional Services (ZCS) who bankroll the club. All it takes is a command from the commander and Chipepo will be at President Stadium with no hesitation.

Prison currently sits in the relegation zone with six points.

Kansanshi Dynamos

If there is a coach who is not sitting pretty, it is Kansanshi Dynamos trainer Boyd Mulwanda. If anything, Chipepo’s availability will unsettle Mulwanda.

Despite their investment in the club with some household names like Jesse Were, Dave Daka, and Ronald Kampamba, among others, Kansanshi have yet to flourish under Mulwanda.

Kansanshi are two points above the relegation zone. With a Chipepo available, the club may be fond of the idea of bringing him down to Solwezi at the expense of Mulwanda.

Chipepo could be the man to turn things around at Kansanshi. He has a proven track record of success and would be able to get the best out of the players at his disposal.

Green Eagles

Green Eagles are struggling under Namazaba, who was recently given a three-match ultimatum. If Namazaba is sacked, Chipepo would be a good candidate to replace him.

It will be an interesting few days for Chipepo. Based on his success with Power Dynamos, he is likely to have a number of options to choose from.
