Chingola-based Zambian Super League side Nchanga Rangers has officially appointed former Zesco United head coach George Lwandamina as the new head coach.
He replaces Robert Tembo, whose technical bench was sent on administrative leave earlier this month following a disappointing start to the season.
Tembo’s tenure saw Nchanga Rangers secure promotion to the Super League. However, the team struggled to adapt to top-flight football, winning only two of their first 11 games this season. They recorded five losses and four draws, leaving them fourth from the bottom of the table with just 10 points—firmly stuck in the relegation zone. On November 10th, Tembo and his entire coaching staff were sent on leave.
In a statement issued eight days later, the club unveiled its new technical bench.
“Nchanga Rangers Football Club has appointed a new technical bench, led by Head Coach George Lwandamina.
Mulwanda also joins Nchanga Rangers
The club has also appointed Boyd Mulwanda as first assistant coach. Israel Mwanza will be the second assistant coach, Humphrey Malikoni as physical trainer, and Yona Phiri as goalkeeper coach.”
Lwandamina’s immediate task will be to steer Nchanga Rangers away from the relegation zone. The experienced tactician, often referred to as “Chicken” in football circles, brings a wealth of experience, having managed several clubs and the Zambian national team.
His most recent stint was with Zesco United, where he parted ways at the start of the current season. That came after the club failed to progress past the first preliminary round in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Club President Shapi Shachinda expressed optimism about the appointment, saying:
“We’re thrilled to have George Lwandamina and his team on board. We believe they have the expertise and pedigree to deliver to the expectations of our sponsor, the Exco, our supporters, and other club associates. We are confident that they will take the team to greater heights.”
