Mwepu, who was visiting Zambia for a holiday, reportedly suffered a suspected heart attack and fell off the car he was driving before he was rushed to the hospital.
Zambia’s Ministry of Health Permanent Secretary Luckson Kansonka has confirmed the development to ZNBC Sports and described the 24-year-old’s condition as relatively stable.
Mwepu retired from football in October of last year after being diagnosed with a hereditary heart condition.
He fell ill on a flight to join his Zambia teammates during the international break in September of this year, and he returned to Brighton to undergo additional cardiac tests after a stay in a hospital in Mali.
Later, his club disclosed that, should he have continued playing competitive football, he would have been at a very high risk of suffering a “fatal cardiac arrest.”
However, in December 2022, the 2017 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations winner was appointed as an academy coach for under-6s at Brighton as a show of support.
