During a Copa Libertadores match involving Argentinos Juniors and Fluminense on Wednesday, Marcelo was sent off following a dangerous challenge on Luciano Sanchez, 29, in Buenos Aires.

The Argentinos Juniors’ defender has suffered a dislocated left knee and will likely be out of action for an extended period.

“Luciano Sánchez was discharged from the Finochietto Sanatorium, with a dislocated left knee. The operation will be performed on a scheduled basis within the next 3 weeks,” Argentinos Juniors announced in a statement.

The Real Madrid legend left the pitch in tears and later took to his Instagram account to send a message of solidarity to Sanchez.

“Today I had to experience a very difficult moment inside the field,” he wrote. “I accidentally injured a fellow professional. I want to wish you the best possible recovery.”
