Kolo Toure sacked

Kolo Toure has been sacked as Wigan Athletic coach after just nine games in charge of the Championship club.

He was appointed on a three-and-a-half-year contract on November 29th but only managed two points out of a possible 21.

Before his appointment, Toure was part of Brendan Roger’s backroom staff at Premier League side, Leicester City FC.

The Ivorian was clearly treading water, and last weekend’s 2-0 home loss to Luton left Wigan bottom of the Championship.

Wigan chief executive, Malachy Brannigan, said: “Firstly, I’d like to thank Kolo, along with Kevin and Ash, for their efforts during their time at the football club.

“Unfortunately, the results on the field have not been as we would have liked. The board felt it necessary to give us the best possible chance of remaining a Championship club next season.”

Toure, who became the first African to be appointed as head coach of a senior English team, lost six games, drew three, and won none during his time at Wigan.

This was the first time for the 2015 African champion to work as head coach. He previously was a first-team coach at Leicester City for three years under Rogers.
