Botswana Women’s National Team captain Sedilame Maitumelo Bosija has expressed confidence that at least one team from the COSAFA region—comprising Zambia, South Africa, and Botswana—will reach the semifinals of the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The tournament is scheduled to run from July 5 to 26.

Speaking during the WAFCON Stars Spotlight Webinar Series, Bosija said her team draws motivation from regional powerhouses like Zambia and South Africa, who have made notable progress both continentally and globally.

“Honestly, there’s no pressure. For us, it’s more motivation,” Bosija stated. “We always want to push hard to be like the likes of Zambia and South Africa. It shows that we too can compete at this level and maybe even qualify for the World Cup or reach the WAFCON finals. So it’s just about going out there, having fun, and showing what we are capable of.”

Bosija also expressed hope for strong representation from the region in the latter stages of the tournament.

“To be honest, I’ll be happy if a COSAFA team makes it to the top four. A final of cosafa teams can be great, ” she added.

Botswana has been drawn into a tough Group B alongside continental heavyweights Nigeria, as well as Tunisia and Algeria.

Defending champions South Africa will compete in Group C with Ghana, Mali, and Tanzania. Zambia headlines Group A, which also includes tournament hosts Morocco, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
