The Zambian women’s national team handed Angola a 6-0 battering in the first leg of the Women’s AFCON qualifier at the Estádio 22 de Junho on Wednesday.

With the ticket to Morocco all but secured, the Copper Queens will be looking to extend their aggregate score to historic figures.

The 6-0 decimation of the Welwitschias has already beaten Zambia’s record of aggregate victories in the Women’s AFCON qualifiers.

The last time the Copper Queens recorded such a resounding win was when they defeated the Scorchers of Malawi 9-4 during the 2012 edition of the qualifiers.

Seven answered goals from Zambia in the first leg were followed by a 2-4 defeat to Malawi in Blantyre.

3. Ghana 19-0 Guinea (1998)

This was the first time a qualification round preceded the major tournament. Ghana put an astonishing 19 goals past Guinea during the African Women’s Championship qualification back in 1998. After winning 11-0 in Accra, they recorded an 8-0 victory on their visit to Guinea. The Black Queens eventually suffered a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the final.

2. Ivory Coast 20-0 Niger (2021)

The most recent record of a basketball-like scoreline in the women’s AFCON qualification was Ivory Coast’s 20-0 decimation of Niger. The West African outfit won 9-0 and 11-0 away and at home, respectively. However, they did not make it to the 2022 edition after suffering a 3-0 aggregate loss to Nigeria in the next round of the qualifiers.

1. Ghana 22-0 Guinea (2004)

As if the clobbering of Guinea back in 1998 was not enough, Ghana went three goals better by registering a 22-0 aggregate victory in the 2004 qualifiers. After securing a 13-0 away victory, the Black Queens put on a show in front of the home fans by winning 9-0 in Accra. They eventually went on to secure bronze at the finals tournament in South Africa.

It will take something really special for the Copper Queens to equal or surpass these numbers in their return match against Angola in Ndola. However, the 2022 women’s AFCON bronze medalists will be optimistic about at least getting their aggregate score to double figures.

This will be the first time the Copper Queens will be playing in front of their home fans at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
