Kansas City Current FC and Malawian striker Temwa Chawinga is committed to keep getting better after breaking the record for most goals scored in a single National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season.

Temwa’s outstanding accomplishment follows her breaking Sam Kerr’s previous record of eighteen goals, which she set in 2019 while playing for the Chicago Red Stars.

The Malawian striker is also currently leading the league’s Golden Boot race with 19 goals. With just two games left in the regular season, she aims to add to her tally.

“I’m thrilled about my achievements, especially breaking the record, but I won’t be complacent. My focus is on scoring even more goals,” she told BolaNews.

“This accomplishment is a team effort. It’s for my teammates and the coaching staff who have supported me along the way. Now, I’m looking to set even more records.”

Temwa not in competition with Banda

Though she holds a six-goal lead in the Golden Boot race over second-placed Zambian striker Barbara Banda of Orlando Pride, Temwa emphasizes that her goal is not to compete against others.

“As a striker, my responsibility is to score goals and support my team. Barbara is a great player and a friend; I’m not here to compete with her.”

Temwa has been called up for Malawi’s team for the 2024 Cosafa Women’s Championship, which is scheduled for October 22–November 2, 2024, in Gqeberha, South Africa.

She was instrumental in the competition the previous year, helping the Scorchers defeat Zambia’s Copper Queens 2-1 in the championship match to win their first international trophy.

Temwa finished as the top scorer with nine goals, earning recognition as the best player in the tournament.
