Green Buffaloes Football Club head coach Halubono has dismissed claims that the club does not give young players a chance to prove themselves.

“I know most people say that Buffaloes does not give chance to young players, but that is not right. We give chance to any player who is working extra hard,” Halubono told the club’s media.

He added that internal competition drives performance.

“This really is helping us, but everyone is fighting to be in the team and if you don’t perform accordingly you even know that there is someone to take up your position.”

The coach’s comments come after U20 National Team players Lydia Shamalima and Natasha Kasema made their senior team debut over the weekend against Red Arrows in a Week 3 encounter. Introduced in the 70th minute, the pair quickly made an impact, with Shamalima scoring 13 minutes later as the Zambia Army side went on to win 3-0 at Nkoloma Stadium.

Halubono praised both players for their contributions.

“It is a good chance for the young girls. First of all, let me start by appreciating the teams that gave us these players, ZISD and Ingwe Queens, we really appreciate their support. The girls have started on a high note, Shamalima gave a goal and not only the goal but they played well together with Natasha [Kasema].”

Green Buffaloes have started their campaign with two wins and one draw in the Eden University Women’s Super League.

Their latest 3-0 victory over Red Arrows has lifted them to second place with 7 points, two behind early pacesetters Green Eagles.
