The GFA made the announcement on Tuesday, weeks after Hauptle was named coach of Zambia's Copper Queens.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has appointed Swedish coach Kim Lars Björkegren as the new head coach of Ghana’s national women’s team, the Black Queens. He succeeds Nora Hauptle, whose contract with the GFA expired at the end of December 2024.

Hauptle signed with Zambia as the Copper Queens’ head coach earlier this month.

Kim, a UEFA License A coach, has previously coached Apollon Ladies in Cyprus’ top women’s league and Linkopings FC in Sweden’s Damallsvenskan (top women’s league).

He also coached Beijing BG Phoenix in the Chinese Super League (who finished third in both the Chinese Women’s FA Cup and Super Cup in 2018) and was the technical director of Manila Digger FC in the Philippines.

Kim most recently served as manager of Racing Louisville in the National Women’s Soccer League of the United States of America.

“With his coaching experience in Women’s Football, coupled with a background in education and sports psychology, Kim Björkegren is viewed by the GFA as the ideal choice to take over the coaching reins of the Black Queens and lead them to greater heights,” read the GFA’s statement in part.

He is now expected to lead Ghana to a successful Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will take place from July 5 to 26, 2025 in Morocco.

Ghana was placed in Group C, alongside defending champions South Africa, Mali, and Tanzania.

Meanwhile, Morocco, Zambia, Senegal, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo are in Group A, followed by record-holders Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana in Group B.
