The historic achievement also marks the first time a Zambia national team has qualified for the World Cup in a row.

Both the boys’ and girls’ U-17 national teams have qualified for their respective FIFA World Cups in the same year for the first time in Zambian football history.

Mercy Chipasula scored a brace in a 1-4 victory over Benin played in Togo, while Ruth Mukoma and Victoria Mbali each added a goal. The host’s lone goal was scored by Isamth Kouta.

Zambian FA President Andrew Kamanga said that the team’s World Cup qualification aligns with the country’s 2025 goals.

“On behalf of FAZ, I would like to congratulate the Zambia Under-17 Women National Team for qualifying for the world cup and doing it in style,” he says.

“Congratulations to the players and technical bench for achieving this historic back-to-back qualification. Thanks to the Zambian football community for supporting our national teams, the FAZ secretariat staff and clubs for being part of this success.”

Kamanga says the victory reinvigorates FAZ’s spirit to sustain Zambia’s participation at major continental and FIFA events.

“In 2024 all our national teams qualified for CAF events and 2025 was about targeting qualifying for world cups and winning trophies. From our trajectory so far, we are on course with the under-17 boys and girls qualifying for the world cup,” he said.

Zambia’s U20 team is in Egypt participating in the Africa Cup of Nations, a qualifier for the Chile 2025 FIFA World Cup.
