The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) has confirmed that the 2025 COSAFA Women’s Championship has been postponed following the unavailability of a host nation, bringing an end to South Africa’s seven-year run as host and marking a rare pause in the region’s women’s football calendar.
In a statement dated 20 October 2025, COSAFA Executive Director Sue Destombes informed member associations that the annual championship would not go ahead this year, citing the lack of a willing host country.
“We regret to inform you that the COSAFA Women’s Championship 2025 has been postponed due to the current unavailability of a host,” read part of the statement.
South Africa has been the cornerstone of the COSAFA Women’s Championship since 2018, hosting the past seven editions with distinction. The tournament, seen as the region’s flagship event for women’s football, has consistently attracted top regional talent and provided a vital platform for player development.
Before South Africa’s tenure, Zimbabwe hosted the tournament in 2011 and 2017, while Angola took on hosting duties back in 2008.
With no other country stepping up to assume responsibility in 2025, the competition has been temporarily shelved, ending South Africa’s remarkable run.
Tournament to Return in Early 2026
According to COSAFA, the next edition of the championship is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.
The regional body says discussions are ongoing with potential host nations to secure the future of the competition and ensure its continued success.
“COSAFA is currently engaging with potential hosts to ensure the successful delivery of this competition,” the statement emphasized.
While South Africa carried the tournament’s burden for seven years, the regional football body now hopes to see other countries take up hosting responsibilities to ensure long-term stability.
“We appreciate your understanding and continued support as we work to maintain the high standards of Women’s football within our region,” COSAFA said.
