Malawi’s scorchers demand Cosafa bonuses; FAM chickens out

Former FAM president Nyamilandu made a promise in his capacity, not on behalf of FAM, to reward players MK1 million each for winning the Cosafa Cup, according to new FAM president Fleetwood Haiya.

When Malawi’s women’s football team won the Cosafa Cup in South Africa, many promises were made to the players back home.

However, the players have yet to receive some of the promised rewards, including MK1 million each, which was pledged to the girls by then-FAM president Walter Nyamilandu following their Cosafa victory.

According to Fleetwood Haiya, the ‘token of appreciation’ pledge was made by Nyamilandu in his personal capacity, not on behalf of FAM.

“Scorchers have received all bonuses; what is remaining, according to my understanding, was a promise from our former president [Walter Nyamilandu],” he said.

Haiya said FAM would approach Nyamilandu to fulfill his promise.

“We will follow up on the matter with him because the pledge was made by him in his capacity and not FAM.”

Meanwhile, Nyamilandu declined to comment when contacted by BolaNews.

“I think the best thing is that you contact FAM for details on the matter,” he said.

One of the players, who requested anonymity, told BolaNews that “blame games won’t help us; what we need is our money.”

The player also revealed that it is not true that all bonuses have been settled, claiming that FAM has yet to settle some funds.

“Qualification fees are yet to be settled, then some game bonuses plus that K1 million. Each player is owed the maximum of K2.5 million,” she said.
