The friendly match between Zambia’s Copper Queens and Malawi’s Scorchers on Tuesday showcased a display of incredible talent. However, it was 17-year-old Zambian prodigy Mercy Chipasula who stole the spotlight with her impressive debut performance after being introduced in the 70th minute to replace Maweta Chilenga.

At the time, Zambia was trailing 1-3, and with fans beginning to lose hope, Chipasula provided a much-needed spark. Her ball control and dribbling skills captivated the crowd, bringing them to their feet in sheer excitement.

In the 80th minute, Chipasula proved exactly why coach Nora Häuptle had brought her into the game. She delivered a precise pass to Racheal Nachula, who rose above the defense to nod the ball into the net, reducing the deficit. Although the goal wasn’t enough to turn the match in Zambia’s favor, it revived the fans’ spirits and highlighted Chipasula’s potential.

After the match, Chipasula expressed her joy at making her senior debut and providing an assist. “I feel so good to make my senior debut,” she told BolaNews.“I always put in more effort to be considered for future games.”

The young talent has big aspirations and aims to be part of Zambia’s squad for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which will take place in Morocco this July. “I want to continue working hard and be selected for the tournament,” she said.

Chipasula’s Rise To Fame

Chipasula’s rise to prominence began at the 2024 Cosafa U-17 Girls Championship, where she scored 13 goals in five games and provided nine assists.

Her performance there caught the eye of coach Häuptle, who was impressed with her impact on the senior team.

“She’s a very skillful player. Technically good,” Häuptle said after the match. “She still needs to also level up a bit on certain decision-making, but for me very positive impact

The Copper Queens will continue their preparations for WAFCON in April with a four-nation tournament in Chongqing, China. They are set to face the Philippines, China, and Thailand.

FAZ General Secretary, Ruben Kamanga, informed BolaNews that the friendly tournament will be officially announced once FIFA’s approval is secured.
