Zambia Exits COSAFA Cup With A 3-All Draw Against Botswana

Having failed to register a win, a point nor a goal in the last COSAFA tournament, Zambia were hoping to leave the stage on a respectable note.

Chipolopolo’s adventure at the Council of Southern African Football Associations (COSAFA) has ended on a winless note after the team settled for a 3 – all draw against Botswana.

The tie between Botswana and Comoros on Monday eliminated Chipolopolo from the tournament.

However, having failed to register a win, a point nor a goal in the previous tournament, Zambia were hoping to leave the stage on a respectable note.

A point and some goals they managed but just like last year, they could not manage a win.

With coach Wedson Nyirenda having left the team in the middle of the tournament for some training in Morocco, Beston Chambeshi sat in the driving seat.

Due to some bad defending, Zambia gave up a goal from Thatayaone Kgamanyane two minutes into the match, shocking the Nkana legend.

At the half-hour mark, the team was two goals behind from a Serati Semadi penalty after Fred Mwiche tripped a Botswana attacker.

Zambia made a strong comeback and required the use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in order to be given a penalty, which Charles Zulu, an attacker for Nkana, skillfully converted.

Zambia gained the upper hand and leveled the score, with Zulu this time supplying the cross that Tinklar Sakala had turned in.

Botswana wasted no time to restore their lead, with Thabo Maponda scoring on the hourmark.

Substitute Joseph Phiri scored the game’s final goal with a penalty kick, giving Zambia a point and sending them off the field.
