Stephen Phiri, father of newly called-up Copper Queens striker Samiah Phiri, described his daughter’s national team inclusion as a proud and emotional moment for the family.

Samiah, who plays for Thonon Evian Grand Genève in France, participated in the Copper Queens’ local training camp ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which concluded last Thursday.

“This is a very proud moment for Samiah and for us as a family. She has always spoken about how much she wanted to come back home and represent Zambia. Seeing her in Copper Queens camp was something we had all been waiting for,” Phiri said.

He added that Samiah embraced the experience with excitement and humility, especially enjoying the warm welcome from her teammates.

“She told us that the welcome she got from the girls was very warm. They made her feel at home immediately, and that helped her settle in quickly,” Phiri revealed.

“It was more than just football for her. It was about learning the culture and understanding what it truly means to be Zambian,” he added.

“This experience has opened her eyes. She now understands the expectations and the level of commitment required. I believe her hard work in France will help her build momentum for future call-ups.”

Samiah will now hope to make the squad for the WAFCON, which will kick off from March 17 to April 3, 2026.
